2002 Meetings

Over the course of each year EQC conducts many meetings and public forums and issues numerous recommendations and resolutions.  Resolutions are denoted by bullets and are generally listed under the meeting during which they were approved.

Jan. 24, 2002 - Meeting on power plant issues and needs in Kentucky. Approximately 29 power plant applications have been received by the state since 1999. On June 19, 2001, Gov. Patton issued a 180-day moratorium on new power plant applications to review the impacts of new power plants on the environment and the state's electric supply grid. This moratorium has been extended until July 2002. 

  • Jan. 24, 2002 - Resolution on environmental spills and incidents in Kentucky.
  • Jan. 24, 2002 - Letter to Governor Patton regarding protecting the Blackside Dace. Response.
  • Jan. 24, 2002 - Letter to Governor Patton regarding power plant issues and needs in Kentucky. Response.

March 21, 2002 - The focus of the meeting was to review environmental legislation of the 2002 session including power plant siting, solid waste legislation, Louisville's vehicle emission testing program, smart growth and the proposed Pine Mountain Trail Park.

April 22, 2002 - A mayor, the governor, a rock star and two school teachers are among those who received Earth Day awards from the EQC. The awards recognize Kentuckians for their outstanding commitment and service in protecting the environment.

May 30, 2002 - The focus of the meeting was to review forestry issues and needs in Kentucky and provide public comment regarding Kentucky's forest resources.  PowerPoint presentation in PDF format.

  • May 30, 2002 - Letter to Governor Patton regarding funding land purchases in the Daniel Boone for FY 2003.
  • May 30, 2002 - Resolution on mining federal coal reserves on the Daniel Boone.  Response.
  • May 30, 2002 - Ten recommendations regarding Maxey Flats.
  • May 30, 2002 - Resolution pertaining to Kentucky's forest resources.

May 31, 2002 - The focus of the meeting was to brief the commission about Maxey Flats, a low-level radioactive waste Superfund site. Maxey Flats, a 280-acre, low-level radioactive site, is located in Fleming County.  It opened in 1963 and closed in 1977 after groundwater contamination was detected leaking offsite.  PowerPoint presentation in PDF format.

July 30, 2002 - The focus of the meeting was to review contaminated waste sites and state actions to address these sites. In Kentucky, hundreds of old or abandoned waste sites pose threats to the environment and public health. To date more than 3,000 potentially contaminated waste sites have been identified. Of the 2,500 sites investigated, 95 percent had confirmed contamination. An estimated 57 percent of these sites have been remediated by the state or responsible parties. PowerPoint presentation in PDF format.

Aug. 22, 2002 - The focus of the public meeting was to discuss the future of clean water in Kentucky in recognition of the 30th anniversary of the Clean Water Act, one of the most significant environmental laws in Kentucky.

Nov. 8, 2002 - Pine Mountain Ecotourism Roundtable. Stakeholders from a four-county region gathered at the invitation of EQC to discuss opportunities to move nature tourism forward in the Pine Mountain region. Executive Summary. Summary of Findings.
