2003 Meetings

Over the course of each year EQC conducts many meetings and public forums and issues numerous recommendations and resolutions.  Resolutions are denoted by bullets and are generally listed under the meeting during which they were approved.

Jan. 17, 2003 - The focus of the Jan. 17 EQC annual meeting was to review the accomplishments of the previous year and plan out the direction EQC will take in 2003. Budget issues were also discussed.

April 14, 2003 - EQC Earth Day award ceremony at the Governor's Mansion.

May 8, 2003 - Meeting about Kentucky's environmental future. The state has laid out its vision for the future of Kentucky's environment. Can Kentucky achieve these goals? EQC invited state officials and others to discuss the plan and its goals to improve environmental quality in Kentucky.  PowerPoint presentation in PDF format.

  • May 12, 2003 - Noncoal proposed regulations support with exception of allowing mining on environmentally sensitive public lands.
  • May 27, 2003 - EQC calls for full review of oil and gas program.

June 16-17, 2003 - Revisiting the Martin County coal slurry spill. Commissioners also visited this site to see firsthand efforts underway to cleanup one of largest coal slurry spills in Kentucky. PowerPoint presentation in PDF format.

  • June 15, 2003 - EQC urges EPA to strengthen public outreach and participation in Martin County Coal Slurry Spill Restoration Plan. Response.

July 15, 2003 - Meeting about West Nile virus and pesticide spraying. State efforts to control mosquitoes to minimize the spread of West Nile virus have stepped up in recent years. EQC has compiled a background report and held a public meeting on mosquitoes and pesticide spraying. 

Oct. 16, 2003 - Public forum for the public to better understand implications of environmental contaminants on the health of our children, identify opportunities to improve children's health in Kentucky and provide training and outreach on children's environmental health issues.

Nov. 19, 2003 - The meeting on oil and gas drilling in Kentucky was held in response to predictions that residential natural gas bills will rise to near record levels this winter. The commission invited state officials to review the oil and gas drilling trends in the state to assess if current regulatory rules are sufficient to protect the environment given the possibility of increased oil and gas production in Kentucky.

  • Nov. 20, 2003 - EQC expresses concern regarding surface mining rule affecting public roads.

Dec. 18, 2003 - EQC annual meeting where EQC discusses accomplishments of the year and sets goals for 2004.

  • Dec. 18, 2003 - EQC approves the proposed amendments to water quality standards with the exception of 401 KAR 5:030 pertaining to the antidegradation policy.  Response.
